Leon Goretzka to return to Bayern Munich’s squad for Champions League tie

Bild reports that Leon Goretzka will return to Bayern Munich’s squad for their opening Champions League tie against Dinamo Zagreb on Tuesday.

The midfielder has only played one minute for Bayern this season and that was coming off of the bench right at the end of their 2-0 win against SC Freiburg just before the international break. Against Wolfsburg, Goretzka sat on the bench for the whole game while against Ulm in the DFB Pokal and this weekend against Holstein Kiel, the 29-year-old was left in Munich.

However, despite Sacha Boey’s injury, minutes will still not be easy to come by as Joshua Kimmich and Konrad Laimer can both play at right-back meaning there will be three midfielders still ahead of Goretzka in the pecking order with Aleksander Pavlovic and João Palhinha also included.

For most of the summer, Bayern tried to force Goretzka out of the club but the midfield held firm and refused to leave as he tried to fight for his place in the squad. So far, the fight has not really been successful.
