Lisandro Martínez ruled out until at least April after Man United star's injury setback

Lisandro Martínez is expected to be sidelined until at least April, Manchester United have confirmed.

The central defender suffered a serious knee injury during the second half of the Red Devils' 3-0 win over West Ham on Sunday, leading to him Limping and heading straight down the tunnel.

Despite trying to move on, Martinez's prospects did not look great as the Argentine star appeared distraught on the Old Trafford pitch while awaiting treatment.

After assessing the injury, the Red Devils have now confirmed the extent of his setback, with Martínez ruled out for at least eight weeks.

A Man United statement read: “Lisandro Martínez has suffered an injury to the medial collateral ligament in his knee and is expected to be out of action for at least eight weeks.

“The Argentine defender left the pitch in the 71st minute of our 3-0 win over West Ham United at Old Trafford on Sunday.

“We all wish Licha a speedy recovery and hope to see him back on the field later in the season.”

It has been a hugely frustrating season for the defender who did not return to action until January after a troublesome foot problem.

After missing 22 games before that, Martinez returned against Tottenham in the FA Cup third round, but now looks set for an extended spell on the sidelines.

Erik ten Hag, speaking after the West Ham game, confirmed: “It looks bad, we have to wait and make the right diagnosis.

“At this moment we are very sad, I hope it is not so bad, but we can only pray. It seems that he will have to miss some games again injured.”

Losing Martinez will be a big blow as Man United currently sit in sixth position and hope to sneak into the top four before the end of the season.
