Liverpool have pointed out Bayern Leverkusen right-back, Jeremie Frimpong, as a possible replacement for Trent Alexander-Arnold – who will be out of contract next summer, according to Caught offside.
Alexander-Arnold's time at Anfield could be coming to an end. The 26-year-old's contract will expire at the end of the season. The Reds are now actively working on a potential replacement should the defender fail to sign a new contract amid interest from real Madrid.
According Caught offsideAlthough Liverpool's preference would be for the 26-year-old to remain at the club, they are also exploring other options to replace the England international.
The Merseysiders have now earmarked Frimpong as their top target and have been monitoring the 23-year-old with the club's scouts present during Leverkusen's 2-2 draw against Werder Bremen, according to the report.
CaughtOffside adds that Liverpool manager Arne Slot is “very excited” about the prospect of bringing in the former city of manchester academy star to his team.
However, Liverpool are not the only major European team to show interest in Frimpong, as several other clubs have been heavily linked, so the Reds will have to act quickly if they are to win the race for his signature.
Comparable replacement
With four years left on his contract at the BayArena, Caught offside reports that it remains uncertain whether Frimpong would be willing to move to Anfield. However, Xabi Alonso's possible departure from the club this summer makes it a possibility for the defender, valued at €50m (£42m) per Transfer marketto leave the club.
Alexander-Arnold has written his name in the sands of time when it comes to modern full-backs. He currently holds the record for the highest number of assists made by a full-back in first division history and can rightly be called a legend in the game despite being only 26 years old.
If he leaves Liverpool this summer, replacing him would be a daunting task, but Frimpong would be a worthy successor. The Dutchman has exemplified his notable attacking threats with 85 goals as a full-back.
His attacking performances and defensive solidity have piqued the interest of Arne Slot and Frimpong would be an excellent replacement for Alexander-Arnold should he eventually leave Anfield.
