The former Premier League regulars and promotion hopefuls have an empty bench after the LaLiga team Valencia It triggered Carlos Corberán's release clause.

However, Heitinga's agent has confirmed that his client will not be moving and told him Telegraaf: “John will definitely stay at Liverpool this season.”

Former Everton player Heitinga was a surprise arrival at Anfield during the summer, and Slot brought his entire coaching team from Feyenoord upon his appointment.

However, as one member was unable to sign in time due to visa restrictions, Heitinga was drafted as a free agent.

The 41-year-old spent the previous season at West Ham as an assistant, but left in the summer alongside the manager. David Moyes.

Heitinga began his coaching career at youth club Ajax in 2017, shortly after retiring with them as a player.

Having coached the under-19 and second team Jong Ajax, he took over the top job in 2023 to replace the disastrous Alfred Schreuder who had led the Eredivisie giants to the relegation zone.

Heitinga would stabilize things for a third place and the Europa League, starting with a record of 14 wins, four draws and four losses in 22 games.

Now back as an assistant, Heitinga has been part of a technical team that has led Liverpool to an extraordinary start to the post-Jurgen Klopp era.

The Reds have won 23 of their 27 games in all competitions and have suffered just one defeat this season.

Heitinga has a decent level of experience in his short career, having previously worked as an assistant at West Ham and head coach at Ajax.

That leaves them first in the Premier League and in the league phase of the Champions League, while they are also qualified for the semi-finals of the Carabao Cup.

Understandably, that has sparked interest in Heitinga, although hiring a Liverpool assistant isn't always the best idea.

Pepijn Lijnders, Klopp's long-time assistant, left alongside the German in the summer and took up a new job in the Austrian Bundesliga with Red Bull Salzburg.

However, Lijnders lasted only six months in office before being fired on December 16 with a record of 13 wins and nine losses in 29 matches.
