The Reds issued a statement on their website confirming that their former captain is currently hospitalized and described his condition as “serious”. The club added that they are in contact with the 68-year-old's family and will offer him support during this difficult time. Lineker paid tribute to Hansen, with whom he worked on Match of the Day for more than a decade, expressing his sympathy for Alan, Janet and his family.

A club statement said: “The thoughts and support of everyone at Liverpool FC are with our legendary former captain Alan Hansen, who is currently seriously ill in hospital. A defender known for his elegance, Hansen's illustrious career with the Reds spanned 14 years, arriving from Partick Thistle in 1977 and included eight league titles, three European Cups, two FA Cups and three League Cups. Known affectionately as 'Jocky' to his team-mates, Hansen is among the club's top 10 all-time appearance-makers, having played 620 games and also served as Liverpool captain for four seasons. The club is currently in contact with Alan's family to offer our support during this difficult time, and our thoughts, wishes and hopes are with Alan and the entire Hansen family. “We will provide further updates as we receive them and kindly request that the Hansen family's privacy be respected at this time.”

Tributes to Hansen poured in, with former Liverpool striker John Aldridge expressing his thoughts and well wishes. Liverpool's rivals Everton also tweeted their support, while former referee Keith Hackett and former Crystal Palace striker Mark Bright also sent messages of encouragement and support on social media.
