Liverpool hero hospitalized with injuries and unable to fly home after Ajax Legends match

Former Liverpool star Fabio Aurelio suffered serious injuries at Anfield during the club's Legends match against Ajax last month.

During the international break, Aurelio joined numerous former players from both clubs such as Liverpool assured a 4-2 victory in Merseyside.

In the first half, the 44-year-old was substituted after trying to stop Kiki Musampa's goal for Ajax.

As a result of his defensive efforts, Aurelio suffered a punctured lung and five broken ribs, requiring an overnight stay at Aintree University Hospital.

In an interview with The AthleticHe recounted the moment he suffered the injury.

“I just tried to block and as he kept going after shooting, he ended up hitting me with his knee,” the Brazilian said.

“You don't expect an accident like that to happen at a Legends game, but when you go out in front of 60,000 people, the competitive streak comes to light.”

Unable to take part in the post-match celebrations with his teammates, Aurelio had to extend his stay in the United Kingdom and postpone his return to Brazil due to concerns over his injury.

“I couldn't fly back last week due to damage to my lung,” he added.

“At first the doctors said I would have to wait three weeks, so I was a bit scared, but the specialist saw the x-rays a few days ago and said he had calmed down.

“The lung is fine and the ribs, it's just a matter of time before they heal.”

During his six years with Liverpool, Aurelio racked up 133 appearances for the club, contributing to their League Cup and Community Shield triumphs.

The Brazilian played alongside Rafa Benítez. Roy Hodgsonand Kenny Dalglish, before leaving England in 2012 to join local club Gremio.

He subsequently retired from professional football just two years later.
