Liverpool hero who left the club in the summer 'considering retirement at 33'

Joel Matip is reportedly considering retiring from football at just 33 years old.

The defender, who recently played in LiverpoolHe became a free agent over the summer after leaving the Reds but has yet to join a new club.

Three months after his Anfield contract expired, reports in Germany claim Matip's career as a footballer is all but over.

Both former club Schalke and Hamburg had been linked with a move for the centre-back, but according to Ruhr canalsMatip personally ruled out returning to football.

Matip has not yet publicly announced a decision on his future.

The Cameroonian star joined Liverpool on a free transfer in 2016 after leaving Schalke 04 and became a firm favorite on Merseyside.

During his time at the club, Matip played 201 games and was a pillar in Jurgen Kloppfrom the side.

Aligned as a center back, he formed a formidable pair with Virgil van Dijk which provided the basis for so much success.

That included success in the Champions League in 2019 and winning the Premier League in 2020.

Matip also won the FA Cup, EFL Cup, Community Shield and UEFA Super Cup during his time with the Reds.

Despite being a central player under Klopp, Matip was unable to play a major role in the German's send-off after suffering an ACL injury against Fulham on December 3 last year.

That could become the last game of the 33-year-old's career after failing to return to fitness.
