Liverpool may have missed out on Xabi Alonso, but Wolves' Gary O'Neil could be the right man to replace Jurgen Klopp.
That's according to talkSPORT's Troy Deeney, who believes Reds The next appointment should be a younger manager to alleviate the high expectations of winning the Premier League.
Klopp surprisingly announced in January that will leave Liverpool at the end of the season after nine highly successful years at Anfield.
Alonso quickly became a hot favorite to replace him, but has since reaffirmed his commitment to Bayer Leverkusen.
Following the news, Deeney suggested the Wolves head coach. o'neil He could be the man to start the post-Klopp era at Liverpool.
“They have a culture now,” he told Majestic on The Final Word on talkSPORT. “We heard someone from Arsenal calling earlier talking about the club having been away for seven or eight years.
“But now they are here to stay because (manager Mikel) Arteta has had to build that. I think it is already there. You are inheriting people who are used to winning, they are all internationals, they are used to winning.” .
The two then highlighted David Moyes' struggle when he replaced Sir Alex Ferguson at Manchester United in 2013, a season after guiding them to Premier League glory.
“I'm going to tell you a name. I think (Liverpool) needs a manager next year more than a coach, so I'm going to say Gary O'Neil.”
Since taking over in August, O'Neil has impressively taken Wolves to the top half of the Premier League table and within three points of the European places.
talkSPORT understands that it is ready to reject an offer Manchester United and Wolves want to secure his future, but Deeney believes he would fit well at Liverpool.
“The reason I say Gary O'Neil is because I think Liverpool will have a very young team next year,” he added.
“If the rumors are to be believed, three or four of the big players could leave and stay with a really young team.
“I think they could be a team that needs a younger manager who is used to working with young players without too many expectations of winning the league. If someone like (Brighton manager Roberto) De Zerbi came in, we would expect Liverpool to still be among the top four.”
With Alonso now out of the race, Liverpool's search for Klopp's successor will continue heading into the new season.
Sporting Lisbon's Rubén Amorim and De Zerbi are among the rumored names, as is German national team coach Julian Nagelsmann.
However, if Deeney's proposal somehow comes to fruition, then it would signal the latest step in O'Neil's impressive managerial rise.
