Liverpool rejected Real Madrid's signing attempt Trent Alexander-Arnold in the January window.

The 26-year-old defender will expire in the summer and, according to the rules, is free to sign a pre-contract for next season starting on New Year's Day. Madrid has long been linked as a possible destination, but an attempt to get ahead of that process has failed, with Liverpool rejecting the measure.

Madrid's offer for Alexander-Arnold was rejected before any financial package could be offered to buy out the remainder of his contract.

Liverpool executives continue to negotiate with Alexander-Arnold's advisers and family, with few indications, public or otherwise, that he would like to leave his boyhood club.

The Alexander-Arnold situation remains without a long-term solution, while the club has not yet reached agreements to extend the contracts of Mohamed Salah and Virgil van Dijk.

At the weekend, Arne Slot distanced himself from the negotiations, with the coach saying: “I think I have a lot of control over what they do when they are on the training ground or in a meeting with me. But if you're talking about his private life I have no control. “I have control over what I expect from them on the field and I am very happy to see what Trent, Mo and Virgil bring to the field.”
