Liverpool They have reportedly set their sights on closing a “last-minute” deal to sign Olympiacos star Santiago Hezze, according to Spanish outlet Signings.
It is an open secret that the Reds wanted to strengthen their engine room by signing a new playmaker this summer and were interested in acquiring Martín Zubimendi from Real Sociedad.
However, following the Spaniard's decision to remain at his boyhood club, the Merseyside club changed their approach and concentrated on signing other targets.
They have now signed Giorgi Mamardashvili from Valencia but he is seen as a long-term replacement for Alisson and with the Brazilian set to remain first choice at Anfield, the Georgian has been sent back out on loan to Mestalla to continue playing football and develop.
Additionally, Federico Chiesa has joined the club in a £12.5m deal at the end of this window to bolster the front line.
Hezze to Liverpool
However, Signings claims Liverpool are still interested in signing a new midfielder before today's 11pm deadline and now have their sights set on signing Hezze.
The report says Liverpool are “determined” to seal a “last-minute” deal to secure his signature, but they may find it difficult to complete the deal as the Greek side would not want to let their star player leave late in this window.
The 22-year-old, valued at around £8 million by Transfer marketA , still has four years left on his contract with Olympiacos, having joined the club last summer. Therefore, they are in no hurry to cash in on him and therefore Liverpool will have to offer a lucrative proposal to convince Olympiacos to let him go.
The Argentine enjoyed a stellar campaign for the Greek giants last season, winning the Conference League. Therefore, it seems that, after being impressed by the midfielder's recent performances, Liverpool have shown their interest in signing him.
Liverpool need depth in the number six position so signing a new defensive midfielder would be the right decision and Hezze could be a smart acquisition for the long-term future if they buy him.
However, it will be interesting to see if the Merseyside club ultimately opt to formalise their interest in signing him before today's deadline.
