Liverpool We need to start planning for life after Mohamed Salahwho is now 32. Although a short-term contract extension could be on the cards for the Egyptian, whose current deal at Anfield expires next year in June, the Reds are obliged to bring in a long-term option considering his age.
The Spanish media outlet Fichajes has reported The English club are keeping a close eye on Takefusa Kubo for a possible move next summer. The report adds that they have been “closely monitoring the Japanese for months” and that 2025 could be a “turning point” in the striker's career.
Kubo, formerly a product of Barcelona as well as real MadridAccording to the report, the 23-year-old has a £50m release clause in his contract with Real Sociedad. The La Liga club are likely to recommend any of the 23-year-old's suitors for that amount as there appears to be hesitation on their part in negotiating a lower fee.
Is Kubo good enough to replace Salah?
Liverpool need a quality right winger to replace Salah. While Kubo's qualities need no introduction, he has not been prolific in front of goal throughout his career so far. Last season, he scored just Seven goals and had five assists In all competitions. In 2024/25, he has only scored one goal in four games so far.
The Reds simply cannot justify spending £50m on a player who cannot do what Salah has done best for them. Instead, a better option for them would be Real Madrid striker Rodrygo Goes, whose future in the Spanish capital has been under scrutiny of late following the arrival of Kylian Mbappe.
Rodrygo, twice Champions League The title winner has scored at least 20 goals and assists for Madrid despite playing a supporting role behind Vinicius Junior for much of last season. He has also exploited the likes of Chelsea and Manchester Cityso Liverpool can rely on their ability to step up in big games.
Whether the Brazilian is actually open to a transfer remains to be seen, as he continues to insist he is happy at Real Madrid. However, it would be worth Liverpool taking some time to test the waters.
