Hughes joined Bournemouth's recruitment team under Eddie Howe after retiring from playing and was promoted to manager during the club's stay in the Premier League.

The Cherries announced his departure at the end of the season on March 5.

He will be tasked with helping to develop the Reds squad without legendary manager Jurgen Klopp, who will leave the club at the end of the season.

Hughes will be assisted by former sporting director Michael Edwards, who will return to the club after having been appointed general director of football at Anfield.

One of the first tasks that Edwards and Hughes will have to face will be to find a successor for Klopp with the former Liverpool Player Xabi Alonso is seen as the first option for the position.

Liverpool have been without a permanent sporting director since the summer and Edwards' successor Julian Ward has left after less than a year in the role.

The club signed German Jord Schmadtke on a temporary basis to help Klopp in the summer transfer window, in which Liverpool signed Alexis Mac Allister, Dominik Szoboszlai, Wataru Endo and Ryan Gravenberch.

Hughes began his career as a 17-year-old player at Arsenal, although he never played for their senior team.
