Newcastle have narrowed their search for a replacement for sporting director Dan Ashworth to two, talkSPORT understands.
talkSPORT understands Crystal Palace sporting director Dougie Freedman is in the final two to replace Ashworth, who looks set to join. manchester united.
Freedman is already on Man United's short list if a move for Ashworth cannot be completed, which has already been complicated by Newcastle.
In addition to the head of the Palace, the Magpies are also considering a foreign candidate.
Freedman currently holds the same position as sporting director at Crystal Palace, where he has enjoyed great success.
The former Eagles striker is credited with some of his brilliant transfer deals in recent years, including deals to sign promising talents such as Michael Olise, Marc Guehi and Eberechi Eze.
Newcastle are eager to find someone to fill the role of sporting director before the summer transfer window opens after the season ends.
Ashworth is currently on gardening leave after making it clear he wants to join United, who have tipped him as their man to partner manager Jason Wilcox, who signed last month.
Ashworth has already built a strong reputation as a top sporting director with an eye for talent.
Before signing for Newcastle in early 2022 and arriving in the summer, the 52-year-old served at Brighton, the FA and West Brom.
While at St. James' Park, Ashworth oversaw transfers during a period which saw Alexander Isak, Sven Botman and Anthony Gordon sign for Newcastle.
