According to SportBild (via Sports witness), Manchester United and Liverpool are interested in signing Bayer Leverkusen defender Jonathan Tah for free transfer.

The German international was linked with Bayern Munich in the last transfer window, but did not meet Leverkusen's asking price. As a result, Tah stayed at the reigning Bundesliga champions, but has already decided to leave the club when his contract expires next summer.

Move to the Premier League

United spent big money to sign Leny Yoro and Matthijs de Ligt last summer and both are expected to become mainstays in central defence. Therefore, the Red Devils might not consider a deal for Tah.

Even if they are interested in signing him, there is no guarantee he will have a starting role under the coach. Erik the HagIn addition to this, the club has another challenge ahead: qualifying for the Champions League.

Liverpool are therefore the best placed team to sign the former Hamburg player. Virgil van Dijk's future is uncertain as his contract expires next summer. If he were to leave, Tah would be a perfect addition to their ranks.

The 1.96m star has Van Dijk's leadership qualities and ball-playing attributes. He could slot in perfectly in the centre of defence and could also be handed the captain's armband thanks to his experience as Leverkusen captain.

Bayern remain the favourites to sign Tah at the moment, but Liverpool could emerge as a serious destination for him if they seek an experienced replacement for Van Dijk during next summer's transfer window.
