Manchester United announce the signing of Joshua Zirkzee from Bologna for £36m on a five-year contract
Joshua Zirkzee's move to Manchester United has finally been confirmed, becoming the club's first signing of the INEOS era.
He Red Devils will pay Bologna £36m over three years after agreeing to shell out just over his £34m release clause.
Zirkzee has signed a five-year contract with Theatre of Dreams, with an option for a further 12 months.
Incredibly, Bayern Munich will pocket 50 percent of the transfer fee after swapping the Allianz Arena for Bologna in 2022.
Erik ten Hag has been keen to provide competition for Rasmus Hojlund up front after Anthony Martial left Old Trafford as a free agent.
And United have decided to press ahead with the signing of Dutch international Zirkzee, whose 11 Serie A goals last season led Bologna to the Champions League.
The 23-year-old was part of Ronald Koeman's squad for Euro 2024 but was limited to just two substitute appearances from the bench.
Expressing his delight at joining United, he told the club website“After speaking with the manager and the club's management, I know how exciting the future will be here.
“And I can't wait to play my part in making Manchester United successful.
“I am a player who has always dedicated everything to winning; I am ready for this next challenge, to move to another level in my career and win more trophies.
“It's a privilege to be part of such an iconic club. I now have to take a short break from being with the national team, but I'll be back ready to make an impact straight away.”
United's new sporting director Dan Ashworth said of the signing: “Securing a striker to bolster our already strong group of attacking players was a key objective for this summer.
“We are delighted to have managed to sign a player of Joshua's calibre so early in the transfer window.
“Joshua is an exceptional talent who is ready to make an impact at Manchester United.
“His ability and desire to develop into a world-class player means he will be a great addition to the squad we are building for the exciting season ahead and beyond.
“Having achieved so much in his career, we will provide Joshua with the perfect platform to reach the next level under the guidance and support of Erik ten Hag and the coaching staff.
“We look forward to seeing Joshua thrive at Old Trafford in the years to come.”
