The two clubs have since been in negotiations over a compensation package, with Newcastle demanding up to £20m to terminate his contract at St James' Park.

Without reaching an agreement, the case was to be decided by the court of arbitration, but now it seems that the clubs have found a solution.

Sir Jim Ratcliffe has been keen to bring Ashworth to Old Trafford as sporting director, where he will join Jason Wilcox, who He arrived as technical director in April.

Ashworth will work alongside Erik ten Hag to strengthen the Manchester United squad for the new season.

The Dutch manager is widely expected to sign a new contract at Old Trafford, with summer signings topping the priority list ahead of the new campaign.

Despite winning the FA Cup, Manchester United finished eighth in the Premier League, a position they will want to improve.

The Red Devils will begin the new season with a home clash against Fulham on Friday 16 August.
