Dominic Calvert-Lewin would be an 'upgrade' in the striker department for Manchester United.

That's according to talkSPORT's Darren Bent, who praised how good the Everton striker can be on his day.

According Sky sports According to reporter Dharmesh Sheth, Calvert-Lewin is one of the potential signings that Manchester United are looking to add to their roster.

Manchester United have recently taken their transfer tally to four this summer by completing the signings of Bayern Munich defensive duo Matthijs de Ligt and Noussair Mazaraoui.

They had also previously signed Lille defender Leny Yoro and Bologna striker Joshua Zirkzee in the transfer window.

And Erik ten Hag will now turn his sights to the next target.

Calvert-Lewin has been at the Merseyside club since 2016, and in that time has scored 68 goals in his 248 appearances.

After coming through Sheffield United's academy, he spent two seasons on loan with the Blades at Stalybridge Celtic and Northampton Town before signing for Everton.

He also enjoyed a brief spell as an England player, receiving a call-up from Gareth Southgate in October, but was ultimately dropped from the squad from 2021 onwards.

But former Aston Villa and England striker Bent told talkSPORT Drive that while he was not convinced he was the right signing for Manchester United, he rated him extremely highly when he was at his best fitness.

“I think it's probably an upgrade on what you've got,” he said, although he would not explicitly say whether he specifically believed it was an upgrade on Red Devils striker Rasmus Hojlund.

“I'm torn on Dominic Calvert-Lewin,” he continued. “On the one hand, when you look at his numbers, you say: no.”

These numbers show that the striker has scored just 14 goals in 66 games over the last three seasons.

Although Bent praised him, he thought his inconsistency was a factor against him.

“But when he's fit, he's unplayable,” Bent continued. “When he's fit and in top form, he's unplayable. He's big, he's strong.”

“He's good in the air. When he's in the game, nobody can beat him. He's one of the best in the air. When he's confident, he's there.

“With Ancelotti there were times when he was unplayable. With Ancelotti that season, right?

Darren Bent and Andy Goldstein clash over whether Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes will start for Manchester City as the pair place a £500 bet on the Red Devils' Premier League position

“But unfortunately for him, he can't stay in shape. Why not? He can't be trusted.”

And Bent admitted he would be “stunned” if Manchester United decided to go ahead with the striker's move, and that it was not a decision he would recommend to the club.

“He's not reliable and it's not because of his form, I'm not trying to be harsh,” he explained.

“But the kid just doesn't play enough games. There's no sustained time he can stay fit.

“Still, for Manchester United, I would like to. You have to reach another level if you want to get back to where Manchester United should be. But no, not for Manchester United, no.”
