Manchester United legend slams Luke Shaw for prioritising country over club after latest injury setback
Manchester United legend Peter Schmeichel has accused Luke Shaw of not putting his club first amid the left-back's latest setback.
Shaw, who last wore a United shirt on February 18, overcame a hamstring injury in time to start the match. Euro 2024 Final for England.
But it wasn't long before the left-back returned to the emergency room after… suffering a calf strain during preseason.
In a brief statement, United insisted they were hopeful Shaw would return after the first international break, with a clash with Southampton on September 14 scheduled as a possible return date.
If that schedule remains intact, it would mark 209 days between appearances for Shaw at club level.

Red Devils Icon Schmeichel He has now expressed his frustration at the 29-year-old's injury problems.
“Lucas Shaw “He last played[for United]in February and he still went to the Euros,” Schmeichel told BBC Radio 5 Live.
“I think he played a little bit in the quarter-finals, then in the semi-finals and then in the final. Now he's injured again.”
“He is very important. He has experience and is a top-level left-back.
“He is a Manchester United Player – we pay you.
“He should focus on Manchester United and not his country.”
Boss Erik ten Hag was quick to assert that the club will not rush him back into action.
Shaw is expected to miss at least United's first three Premier League games.
Commenting on the former Southampton star, Ten Hag said on Thursday: “He'll be back in the short term, it won't be long.
“We're looking forward to Luke Shaw, of course.
“He is a very important player for our team and we want to get him back as soon as possible, but we cannot force this process.”
Ten Hag added: “There are problems, but it's not about those who are not available.
“Just like last season, the important thing is who is available and can we put together a strong team. We will do that. (Matthijs de Ligt and Noussair Mazraoui) will be in the squad, and Harry Maguire will also be in the squad.”
“We are not at 100 percent, but we have to take it game by game to improve and achieve higher levels of performance in the team and in individual players.
“We'll see how quickly we can move forward with this process.”
