Manchester United transfer decisions backfire as Luke Shaw may be ruled out for season and Euro 2024
Manchester United may be in a world of trouble at left-back as Luke Shaw has been diagnosed with a long-term injury.
In January the club chose to end the loan of Sergio Reguilón and send Álvaro Fernández to Benfica, while Tyrell Malacia he is injured.
And that is coming back to haunt him as England suffer a recurrence of a leg injury against Luton Town, meaning he may not play again in 2023/24, according to the daily mail.
Shaw lasted just 45 minutes in United's 2-1 win over Luton last time out and was replaced at full-back by Victor Lindelofwhose natural position is the center of the defense.
United signed Reguilon on loan from Tottenham over the summer but terminated the deal in early January and Spurs sent him to Brentford.
They also restructured Fernández's situation, moving him away from a LaLiga relegation battle with Granada and into a Primeira Liga title fight with Benfica.
Those decisions resulted in Shaw and Malacia being their only natural right-backs; However, the latter has not yet played this season due to a long-term knee injury.
The Dutchman is expected to return soon but will likely have to return after not playing since a Nations League match against the Netherlands in June.
In its most recent update, Erik ten Hag said of Malacia: “He had setbacks during his rehabilitation process. It's taken too long; it's bad for him. Bad for us.”
“But now we have made a turn and it is positive: he will return to the field soon. I don't think it will take long to return to team training.”
In the short term at least, that means United will have to field Swedish centre-back Lindelof on the left.
Shaw's situation will also worry the English coach Gareth Southgatewith the 28-year-old a regular for the Three Lions.
Shaw started the season with a thigh problem and then experienced a leg problem against Villa, but returned to play against Luton and only came on at half-time.
