United had earmarked the 21-year-old England international as their top defensive target for the upcoming summer transfer window. However, according to talkSPORT, the club are considering pulling out of the deal due to Everton's high asking price of around £70m (€83m/$89m).
The new co-owners, led by Sir Jim Ratcliffe and his INEOS group, are hesitant to meet this valuation and prefer not to continue the club's tradition of overspending in the transfer market. As well as Branthwaite, United have also expressed interest in Nice and French defender Jean-Clair Todibo. Talks were reportedly held with Tosin Adarabioyo's representatives ahead of his free transfer to Chelsea.
Erik ten Hag's side are scheduled to return to action at the end of July, heading to the United States for pre-season matches against the likes of Arsenal, Liverpool and Real Betis.
