Mark Goldbridge: Xabi Alonso was 'perfect' for Liverpool job; He would not prefer Ruben Amorim instead of Erik ten Hag at Manchester United
Mark Goldbridge admits he cannot understand why Xabi Alonso decided to stay at Bayer Leverkusen rather than return to Liverpool.
He manchester united YouTube fan and host has a theory about why The Anfield favorite rejected a possible move to succeed Jurgen Klopp, and offered his verdict on the Reds' alternative target Ruben Amorim.
“I really expected Alonso to take charge Liverpool work, I was very surprised by that,” Goldbridge told talkSPORT.
“Liverpool is a young team and, although klopp He's leaving at the right time for him, he's probably leaving at the wrong time for the club because it could be a good team for a few years.
“It's a great opportunity for someone to face Liverpool, unlike Man United when Mr Alex Ferguson He left, since it was a fairly aging team.
“I thought the Liverpool job was perfect for Alonso, to be honest, but I think the real Madrid you have been offered a job; that's my theory.
“Carlo Ancelotti is going to be another year older, obviously Alonso has played for Real Madrid, he is Spanish and I think Madrid has told him: 'Don't accept the job at Liverpool because if you go there you will be at Liverpool.' for years, so wait a year and we will accept you.'
“The interesting thing to add about this is: what would happen if in a year's time Jurgen Klopp returned to football and said: 'I like the position at Real Madrid'? Alonso has missed the train.
“He Bayern Munich The job was also there for him, and he didn't accept it either, so I think Alonso has had some kind of conversation about the job in Madrid.
“I don't really see the point in him staying at Leverkusen for another year. They are going to win the Bundesliga title this season and maybe they can win it again next year, but we all know that Bayern Munich will bounce back.
“I think he is waiting for Real Madrid. That's the only thing that makes sense to me.”
Sporting Lisbon manager Amorim has been touted as the new favorite to replace Klopp in the Liverpool dugout, although the 39-year-old recently rejected claims that he has already held talks with the Premier League giants and reached an agreement.
talkSPORT understands Liverpool have been in contact with amorimSporting representatives have not yet established direct contact with any of their targets, and the Sporting coach is considered one of several candidates and possible appointments for the position.
Liverpool are focused on conducting an exhaustive search for Klopp's successor, with Amorim the firm favorite.
Goldbridge says he is “the best of the rest” with a shortage of world-class coaches to choose from, but admits he wouldn't swap Amorim for the Manchester United manager. Erik ten Hagdespite the continued problems of his beloved club under the Dutchman.
“Liverpool have to do something and Jurgen Klopp will be a huge loss,” he added.
“Even as a Man United fan I respect what he has done there, he has a lot of personality and this team will always be Jurgen Klopp's Liverpool.
“Whether you go from Klopp to pep guardiolaI still think: 'Will this work?', and Pep Guardiola is obviously a great coach. So they will always have to bet on someone and they will have to be a little patient.
“It's a big step forward for Rubén Amorim, but obviously Alonso won't go and the market isn't that good. Roberto De Zerbi would be a huge risk, Julian Nagelsmann would probably be too, so Amorim looks the best of the rest and has a style of football close to how Liverpool play under Klopp in terms of energy.
“There is a really good team there and it will be intriguing to play Liverpool next year. They could have a first year like Ange Postecoglou and fight for the title: Tottenham secured the Champions League, but the title would be the equivalent for Liverpool.
“But on the other hand, they could have a season like Mauricio Pochettino at Chelsea, where it just doesn't work in the first year.
“I think Liverpool fans are smart enough to realize that they can't just expect to leave one of the best managers they've ever had and carry on without problems; that would almost be disrespectful to Klopp to assume how easy he is. Is not easy.
“I'm curious how it's going to work out, but I think Amorim is the right guy on the list that's available now.
“But I wouldn't trade it for Ten Hag. I wouldn't trade Ten Hag for anyone right now.
“I think the players should come first and I think any project should last at least three years, and he's only had two, so I'd stick with what we have.”
