Speaking to kicker, new Bayer Leverkusen signing Martin Terrier has spoken about his first impressions of the team and his first week at the club.
On his first impression of Die Werkself, Terrier said: “I was quite surprised by the intensity of the training. The training facilities and the infrastructure are at a top level.”
The Frenchman then explained what his motivation for moving to the BayArena was: “It was an easy decision. It was a great opportunity for me to take on a new challenge. A new league, a new culture. Joining a team that won two titles last season is a big step in my career.” Terrier also commented on the club’s goals for this season: “We obviously want to defend the championship title and play a good role in the Champions League. I will give my maximum to integrate as quickly as possible. I am at the best age for a footballer and want to contribute my experience. Of course, I also want to help with goals.”
Leverkusen have a wealth of attacking options heading into this season with Victor Boniface, Florian Wirtz, Jonas Hofmann, Nathan Tella, Amine Adli and Patrick Schick all able to fill their attacking options. On the competition in these positions, Terrier said: “I have no problem with that. Xabi Alonso puts the players that best suit the opponent. My advantage is that I am versatile and can play in three positions up front. I know that the team was very successful last season and scored a lot of goals. The season will be long and I will wait for my chances. To be successful, it is important to have several players in the positions.” The acquisition of Terrier will add even greater depth to Leverkusen’s attack, which is something at times they needed especially after the injury to Boniface at the beginning of the year.
Before his move to Germany, Terrier spent the entirety of his career in France playing for Lille, Strasbourg, Lyon and Rennes, where he found the most success in Brittany.
Leverkusen kicks off their season in the DFL Super Cup on August 17th when they host last season’s runners-up VfB Stuttgart.
