Mason Greenwood appeared to bid farewell to Getafe supporters following the conclusion of their season, with Manchester United yet to make a final decision over his future.
Greenwood joined Spanish side Getafe on a season-long loan deal last summer. The forward was due to return to United upon the conclusion of his deal expiring on July 1.
Getafe are interested in Greenwood returning, but he seemed to say goodbye in a statement shared on Instagram following Sunday’s 2-1 defeat against Mallorca, their final game of the season.
He said: “Incredibly grateful to the Getafe family and fans for an amazing season, thank you for making me feel welcomed and one of your own. I enjoyed every second, alongside my team-mates and club.
“A bittersweet ending, but it was a pleasure to play for you, I wish you all the best.”
All options remain open regarding Greenwood’s future. United’s preference is to secure a permanent sale, but they are willing to loan him out again if they cannot find a buyer. The club are planning to work through the potential options with his family in the coming weeks.
If United cannot seal a move for Greenwood by June 30, a return to training cannot be ruled out. While it is uncertain if he would rejoin the first team set-up, the club cannot, contractually, prevent his return.
Greenwood was made available for transfer after United confirmed on August 21 that they had abandoned their plan to bring the forward back into the first-team squad.
The Athletic reported earlier this month that Napoli had contacted United over a possible deal for Greenwood. He scored 10 goals and assisted six times in 36 appearances across all competitions for Getafe in 2023-24.
His current United contract expires in June 2025 and includes a one-year extension option that can be activated should the club decide to do so.
It had been decided that Greenwood would resume his career away from Old Trafford after the UK’s Crown Prosecution Service discontinued the case against him for attempted rape, assault, and coercive control after key witnesses withdrew their cooperation. Greenwood denied all the allegations against him.
In February, United co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe stated the club would have to make a fresh decision over Greenwood’s future.
He said: “The process will be to understand the facts, not the hype, and then try to come to a fair decision based on values — is he a good guy or not — and answer whether he could play sincerely for Manchester United well and would we be comfortable with it and would the fans be comfortable with it?”
Greenwood came through United’s academy and made his senior debut under former manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in 2019.
He became United’s youngest player to represent the club in the Champions League, making his competitive debut in the 3-1 win over Paris Saint-Germain at the age of 17.
Since then, he has scored 35 goals in 129 appearances across all competitions for United.
