Robert Lewandowski has made a sensational start to the 2024-25 season with Barcelona, but despite this, there has been a lot of speculation about his future in recent weeks. His current contract expires next summer, and although he is likely to be renewed by an additional 12 months, he is unlikely to be overly prominent for too much longer.
Barcelona said it has started looking for possible successors, although sporting director Deco said MD that the club is mainly focusing on the present for now.
“It's not a priority because we have to focus on this season. Of course, we have to work on the future, but if we don't work more on the future, we forget about the present. We have to think about what we have to do now and not what we have to do in the future because what happens this season can condition the future. It is not enough to be thinking about the future 'event is done, yes carry out.
“What I hope is that Lewandowski continues at the same level that he shows. For me he is one of the best professionals I have seen in my life. It is not by chance that he is where he is and that he has done all the goals he has scored or whether he is at his level. I know that they only reach where they are professionals and above others. We are happy because he connects well with the team, he scores goals.
Deco refused to be drawn specifically on the players who could replace Lewandowski, although he mentioned a certain Erling Haaland – the Norwegian is considered a dream target for Barcelona president Joan Laporta.
“I think it is very difficult to find a striker like Robert today. There is one or two of this level. Maybe Haaland or someone else. There are not many of this level available. But we will not be obsessed with looking for any striker now because we have to focus first on what Robert can do. I think he's happy to be here. He's a winner and if we have an important season, I think he'll want to continue.”
