A former Germany U21 international, Mitchell Weiser wants to represent Algeria. That’s according to Sky Germany who report that the change of association at FIFA has already been completed.
The Werder Bremen defender is eligible to represent Algeria through his grandfather on his mother’s side, and national coach Vladimir Petkovic could be ready to nominate Weiser in the upcoming November international break.
“I have always had the option in mind, as I have the luxury of theoretically being able to play football for two countries,” said Weiser. “It was always a big goal for me to play in a major championship and I believe that I have a better chance with Algeria. I want to achieve as much as possible in my career.”
Weiser has been a consistent performer in the Bundesliga and has already registered three assists in six Bundesliga games for Werder this season. With 206 games in the top flight, the 30-year-old has 14 goals and 36 assists during his time at Koln, Bayern Munich, Hertha Berlin, Bayer Leverkusen and now Bremen.
