Ake appeared to be in severe pain as he was helped to the ground by Dutch teammate Cody Gakpo and German goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen.

Dutch medical staff were immediately summoned onto the pitch and carried Ake off the field on a stretcher towards the end of the first half.

The nature of Ake's injury is unclear, however, casting doubt on his availability for City's Premier League clash with Brentford on Saturday.

Since moving to City in August 2020, Ake has missed more than 30 games with hamstring injuries.

Ake is the latest big name in the English top flight to suffer an injury in the international break after Arsenal captain Martin Odegaard had to be helped off the field during Norway's clash with Austria on Monday.

Odegaard appeared to have twisted his left ankle in a tackle and was writhing in pain on the ground.

He was later seen boarding a plane on crutches, a worrying sign for Arsenal who are nervously awaiting the results of scans to determine the severity of his injury.
