Netherlands midfielder Tijjani Reijnders opened the scoring against Germany after one minute and 39 seconds on Tuesday night, the quickest goal Die Nationalelf have conceded in 50 years.
That’s according to Opta, who point out that it was another Dutch player who scored the quickest goal against Germany 50 years ago, at the 1974 World Cup after Johan Neeskens scored after one minute and 26 seconds.
A difficult test for Germany
Julian Nagelsmann was forced to make one change for their game against the Netherlands after West Ham United’s Niclas Füllkrug picked up an injury during the final training session, meaning Deniz Undav started ahead of his compatriot.
The Stuttgart forward levelled the game before Joshua Kimmich put Germany in the lead from the spot. Denzel Dumfries then levelled the game for the Netherlands five minutes after the break.
Questionable penalty decision
Not long after the Netherlands equalised through Dumfries, Germany had a corner where Xavi Simons came in late on Jamal Musiala in the area, in which the referee did not blow for, a decision that Nagelsmann thought was incorrect.
“Simons clearly came too late and hit Jamal on the foot. I don’t think we can disagree on that. If it were in midfield, you’re guaranteed to get a foul for that,” said Nagelsmann.
