Newcastle have held talks with Charlotte FC over the sale of Miguel Almiron but the package looks too expensive for the MLS side who also enquired after Tottenham‘s Giovani Lo Celso.

The 30-year-old winger is considered one of the leading candidates to move from the Magpies in the summer transfer window, with only two years left on his contract.

After a poor 2023-24 season while being a regular starter at St James’ Park, Newcastle are set to sell the player and have already held discussions with Charlotte FC, looking to use the funds from the Paraguayan to strengthen their defensive line.

However, the MLS side consider Almiron’s transfer to be too expensive, while Mail Sport had previously reported that Steven Gerrard‘s Al-Ettifaq also expressed interest in the player.

As a result, Charlotte FC, currently sixth in the MLS table, then made an approach for Giovani Lo Celso.

Almiron’s potential transfer would mean a return to Major League Soccer as the player moved to Newcastle from Atlanta United in January 2019.

His transfer fee was reported to be around £20m, and the player was often Eddie Howe’s preferred choice for the right wing position.

The 30-year-old had his most successful campaign during the 2022-23 season, scoring 11 goals in the Premier League and providing two assists.

However, his most recent campaign was less successful, leading to discussions about his departure from St James’ Park.

Argentina international Lo Celso made only four starts in the Premier League last season and has one year left on his contract.

Joining Tottenham in 2019 on a year-long loan, Lo Celso has featured in 108 games, scoring 10 goals and providing eight assists.

He was previously linked with a move to Aston Villa, managed by Unai Emery, a known fan of his talents from their time together at Villarreal.
