The deal is likely to see Elliot Anderson move in the opposite direction to help both clubs. PSR problems.

Elanga joined Forest from manchester united last summer and enjoyed a fine season at the City Ground, scoring five goals and providing nine assists to help the club avoid relegation.

Anderson is a graduate of Newcastle's youth academy but has struggled to secure a place in Eddie Howe's starting XI.

With clubs required to comply with Profit and Sustainability regulations by Sunday's PSR deadline, talkSPORT's chief football correspondent Alex Crook says the deal could be mutually beneficial.

Speaking on The Warm Up, Crook said: “It's one of those deals where they help each other out in terms of PSR.

“This is a trade deal, or at least a player going in the opposite direction in terms of Elliot Anderson.

“Villa and Chelsea have done it, Everton too.

“It is an interesting move for Elanga. He is the type of player that Eddie Howe would love to coach and get the best out of because there is talent there, but we haven't seen the full potential of him.

“If you're Newcastle and two seasons ago you finished in the top four and qualified for the Champions League and you were talking about all sorts of big signings, it's not exactly a sexy signing, is it?”

Suggestions earlier this summer indicated that Newcastle were under pressure to sell players in order to comply with the PSR, particularly with Antonio Gordon and Alexander Isak among those linked to departures.

But according to Crook, there are two other English players who are attracting interest.

Anthony Gordon praises England teammate Marc Guehi and says he would love to have him at Newcastle

He explained: “It's almost like a mini deadline day and more than a lot of other clubs, Newcastle deal with it to try and move players forward to avoid points penalties.

“There is interest in Callum Wilson from West Ham and Saudi Arabia, there is also a bit of interest in Kieran Trippier.

AC Milan look set to sign a Premier League right-back this summer – they were interested in Matty Cash and now want to sign Trippier.

“I don't really see how the deal with Trippier will come together between now and tomorrow, especially given that if he's fit he'll hopefully be able to play in the Euro 2019 last 16 game in England.”
