Newcastle pushes with club to hope for Anthony Gordon contract extension amid Liverpool transfer interest
Newcastle are confident they are close to reaching an agreement with Anthony Gordon on signing a new long-term contract, talkSPORT understands.
talkSPORT reported in July that the Magpies wanted to sign Gordon tied after he almost joined Liverpool in June.
The two clubs have virtually agreed a £70m deal as Newcastle They were desperately trying to sell players to avoid a possible PSR penalty.
However, they were able to retain the former Everton winger having transferred Yankuba Minteh and Elliott Anderson to Brighton and Nottingham Forest respectively.
And now Gordon He looks set to extend his stay at Newcastle, where he is currently tied until 2026.
Boss Eddie Howe He recently emphasized the importance of getting Gordon to draft new terms.
He said last week: “I think having your players confident in their future is key to their performances.
“You don't want speculation about transfers or potentially shorter contracts because I think it is distracting and rarely benefits the player or the club.
“So, my wish is that the players are always focused on their performances and that external distractions are minimal.
“Our best way to do that is to keep them safe and happy, but of course there is a balance because with pay structures and the PSR we can't be reckless with what we do either.
“So we have to get those decisions right but of course getting those players to play at their best will have a dramatic effect on our season.
“I think if there are issues with any of the players or with any player, then of course communication and resolution of any issues is really important.”
Gordon has established himself as one of the Premier League's best wingers since his £45million move to St James' Park from Goodison Park in January 2023.
The 23-year-old contributed 12 goals and 11 assists in 48 games in all competitions.
He proved to be a high-level player: he scored against the 'Big Six' of the division: Arsenal, Liverpool, Chelsea, Manchester United, Manchester City and Tottenham.
