Nicolas Jackson has responded to criticism from John Obi Mikel after a Chelsea masterclass.

The Blues striker played a key role in their shock 6-2 win over Wolves on Sunday, scoring the opener before providing an assist for Cole Palmer to make it 2-1.

Jackson's performance came seven days after a display in the 2-0 defeat to Manchester City that sparked criticism from the former Chelsea midfielder.

Covering the defeat to Manchester City, Mikel said: “We played well, we didn't play perfectly, but we played well.

“We created chances, but we didn't take them. And it's an example of how Jackson finishes.

“You can see there, even though he was offside, how he dribbled past one, two or three players and the way he threw the ball.”

With his arms outstretched, he continued: “You need a striker who knows how to put the ball back in the net and that's what we don't have.

“I know I talk about him a lot and sometimes it seems like I'm disrespecting him. That's not the case.

“I think at Chelsea Football Club we need a top-class striker who can score goals.

“A bit like (Haaland), 91 goals (for City), that's absolutely incredible.”

But posting on Instagram after the clash with the Wolves, Jackson gave a blunt response.

He said: “@Mikel_John_Obi shut your mouth, don't talk nonsense. We are killing ourselves for Africa,” with an emoji of a heart, a football and a globe next to it.

Since joining Chelsea for £32m last summer, Jackson has made 47 appearances for the Blues, scoring 17 goals and providing six assists in the process.

However, several high-profile errors and the fact that three of his goals came against a nine-man Tottenham side have seen his reputation diminish.

He will be hoping to push on and prove himself as a standout striker in the Premier League this season.

Darren Bent believes Chelsea have only signed one good player since Todd Boehly arrived at the club: Cole Palmer

However, with the Blues selling Romelu Lukaku, there is a chance that even after the arrival of fellow striker Joao Felix, a rival striker could arrive.

One possibility would be Nigerian striker Victor Osimhen, who has long been linked with a move to Stamford Bridge from Italian giants Napoli.

And Mikel is someone who has consistently advised Chelsea to make that move.

He said on his podcast last November“I just thought: 'I just hope he stays at Napoli.'”

“Or maybe next season, I know you're coming to Chelsea. I assure you, I'll be the agent who negotiates that deal! You're definitely going to Chelsea next season.”

“I'm going to make sure that this deal happens because we're crying out for someone like you. Since the big guy left the club, you know, Didier Drogba, my teammate, we haven't had anyone with that figure, that stature, that personality.

“Someone who can score goals in important games and someone we can rely on to score goals, and I feel like you're that person, you'll fit perfectly into what we need to achieve at the club.

“We are crying out for someone to score goals for us and I think that is what they will give us, so… Saudi Arabia can wait. Give us two or three years at Chelsea or four years and then maybe Saudi Arabia can come.”

“But yes, I hope next season you come to Chelsea. It's amazing. Obviously, living in London, we don't have the best climate, but everything else is amazing, believe me. The club, the people at the club, the training ground, everything is absolutely incredible.”
