Maximilian Beier was awarded his Borussia Dortmund debut against Werder Bremen on Saturday afternoon, starting against Werder Bremen. But after a poor performance from the German forward, who had just 15 touches of the ball before his substitution in the 71st minute, Die Schwarzgelben head coach Nuri Şahin defended his player.
“He’s new to us,” said Şahin. “He has to integrate. He has to get to know the boys and they have to get to know him.”
Although unbeaten this season, Borussia Dortmund’s performance against Werder Bremen was flat. Defensively poor, Werder could well have come away with a win while BVB were lost for ideas in the final third.
Şahin added that Beier “had to suffer because we weren’t really in the game.”
Defending his new attacker, Dortmund’s head coach defended Beier.
“He behaves perfectly,” added Şahin. “He absorbs everything. I’m not too worried at all about Maxi. With every game, every minute he plays for us, we all get to know each other better. It wasn’t his fault at all. And he will become very important to us.”
Beier scored 16 and created three in 33 Bundesliga games for Hoffenheim last season before his €28.5m move to the Westfalenstadion. His performances for TSG also earned him a maiden call-up to the German national team by Julian Nagelsmann, while he was also a used substitute against Switzerland at Euro 2024.
