Nuri Şahin threatens the Borussia Dortmund squad

Last season, Borussia Dortmund came within 90 minutes of being crowned champions of Europe, and in truth, had they taken any of the multitude of chances created prior to the 70th minute, they more than likely would have beaten Real Madrid.

Nevertheless, BvB came up short, making it seven years since they last won a trophy in front of their own fans, having won the DFB-Pokal in 2021 behind closed doors.

Regardless, now under the stewardship of Nuri Şahin, Dortmund are looking to unlock their potential and finally win a trophy.

When asked about the club’s goals for the upcoming campaign, sporting director Lars Ricken commented:

“Theoretically, there are four possible titles: championship, cup, Champions League, and Club World Cup. We don’t just want to play for them; we want to win one too!”

This message was emphasised by Şahin, who made a clear threat to his playing squad:

“If a player doesn’t pull his weight, he’s out. No matter how good he is. I don’t rotate just to give someone playing time. If some players don’t reach a high level, then some will have to play a lot more games. I won’t give anyone anything for free. You have to earn it!”

It is understood that the new coach’s tough approach is impressing Ricken and CEO Hans-Joachim Watzke.

Dortmund’s first competitive fixture of the season is set to take place next week when they face 1. FC Phönix Lübeck in the first round of the DFB-Pokal, where they will be hoping to start the campaign in an emphatic fashion, setting a precedent for the remainder of the year.
