After their loss to 4-1 loss Heidenheim, 1.FC Köln have been relegated from the Bundesliga, joining Darmstadt as the other automatically relegated side.
The last time Köln was in the 2.Bundesliga was in 2019 when they finished first to gain promotion back to the Bundesliga.
The sacking of Steffen Baumgart earlier on in the season did not improve the club’s form as in the second half of they only won two games under replacement manager Timo Schultz.
To make matters worse for Köln, they cannot sign any players in the summer transfer window which will heavily impact their preparation for the 2.Bundesliga and they will likely have to turn to youth players to make up the numbers, similar to Hertha Berlin.
Köln’s relegation now means there are several big teams in the 2.Bundesliga. Köln joins Hamburg, Schalke, Nürnberg, Hertha Berlin and Kaiserslautern all previously big players in German football at some point in their history.
