Julian Nagelsmann has extended his contract at the DFB and will stay as the Germany head coach until the 2026 World Cup, the DFB confirms.

The former Bayern Munich manager was originally bought into the role on an interim basis in October. This came following a run a poor results under former manager Hansi Flick.

Nagelsmann’s task was to simply steady the ship ahead of their home European Championships this summer.

However, the DFB are clearly impressed with Nagelsmann and his staff. So much so, that they’ve now extended his contract until after the 2026 World Cup in North America.

Upon signing the new deal, the 36-year-old said: “This is a decision of the heart. It is a great honour to be able to train the national team and work with the best players in the country. With successful, passionate performances, we have the chance to carry an entire country along with us.”

He continued: “The two victories against France and the Netherlands in March gave us a taste of what was to come. The enthusiasm of the fans really touched me. Together we want to play a successful European Championship at home, we are all fired up for that. After that, I and my coaching team are really looking forward to the challenge of a World Cup.”

This is a big blow for Nagelsmann’s former employers, Bayern. It had been reported in recent weeks that he was their favourite candidate to take the job once Thomas Tuchel left in the summer.

The Bavarians will undoubtedly have others in mind, but one thing is now certain – the next Bayern manager will not be Julian Nagelsmann.
