After three-and-a-half years at Borussia Dortmund, Thomas Meunier (32) departs the Bundesliga club for Turkish Süper Lig side Trabzonspor on a free transfer.

Meunier started Dortmund’s last seven Bundesliga games under Edin Terzić but the Belgian found himself a bit-part player, falling behind Julian Ryerson and Marius Wolf in the pecking order for the right-back spot.

Meunier’s departure comes with Borussia Dortmund planning a major overhaul in the summer. In defence, Marius Wolf and Mateu Morey are under observation as both contracts expire in the summer. An extension for either of them is not out of the question. While Niklas Süle will remain at the club despite criticisms of his fitness recently, Dortmund want to help Süle get back to his best.

A failed Borussia Dortmund departure in the summer

Borussia Dortmund actively tried to sell Meunier in the summer because of the player’s high salary, but his return to Club Brugge fell apart. Now, with six months remaining on his deal, Meunier departs for Trabzonspor.

During his time at the Westfalenstadion, Meunier played 83 games across all competitions, scoring three and creating eight since his free transfer from Paris Saint-Germain in 2020.
