Hamburg have confirmed that they have sacked Tim Walter as their manager with the club currently sitting third in the 2.Bundesliga. At the weekend, Hamburg lost 4-3 to Hannover 96.
Walter joined Hamburg in 2021 and during his time at the club, he turned HSV into a great footballing team but they always fell short when it came to promotion. The most recent example was Hamburg thinking they were promoted on the final day of last season, only for Heidenheim to leap-frog them and HSV would ultimately lose in the relegation playoff to Stuttgart.
Former assistant coach Merlin Polzin and goalkeeper coach Sven Höh will now lead first-team training while a new coach is found.
Previously it was reported that Walter could have been sacked in December just before the winter break but they continued on with him. Several candidates were potentially named including André Breitenreiter and Friedhelm Funkel and former 1.FC Köln coach Steffan Baumgart.
Baumgart is a Hamburg fan and has experience in gaining promotion as he led Paderborn to the Bundesliga in 2019.
