With the club in the midst of a relegation battle, Union Berlin have decided to sack head coach Nenad Bjelica with two games of the season remaining.
Under-19 head coach Marco Grote will be in charge for the remainder of the season with Sebastian Bönig & Marie-Louise Eta as his assistants. The trio were also in charge earlier on in the season after Union had parted ways with Urs Fischer. Union president Dirk Zingler had given Bjelica his support after their 3-4 loss to Bochum on Sunday.
Union’s remaining games are against 1.FC Köln and SC Freiburg. The game against Köln next Saturday is a must-win to avoid relegation as they only find themselves one point away from the relegation playoff position and six points off of an automatic relegation position but with a better goal difference.
Bjelica was meant to leave Union at the end of the season and there were already reports of who could potentially replace him. Former Mainz head coach Bo Svensson is one of the favourites to take charge, reports Sky Germany.
Overall, the Croatian was unable to live up to the tough task of replacing Fischer in the middle of the season and his time in charge of Union will probably be best remembered from his sending-off against Bayern Munich after pushing winger Leroy Sané in the face.
