Wolfsburg have announced that they have sacked head coach Niko Kovac after their 3-1 loss against Augsburg on Saturday afternoon.

After a positive first season at the club and an initial start to this season but since October the club has been on the decline. Wolfsburg have not won a game since December and they currently find themselves in 14th in the Bundesliga, six points off of the relegation zone.

In the summer, Wolfsburg spent large amounts fo money in relation to their club size, on Lovro Majer (€25m), Joakim Maehle (€7m), Mortiz Jenz, Tiago Tomas and Vaclav Cerny (all €8m) without much to show for it. This has been the case for Wolfsburg for several seasons now as due to the amount of money they spend, they should be competing for European places every season.

Bild reports, former Southampton manager Ralph Hasenhüttl, who is currently clubless, and former Red Bull Salzburg and current Al-Ahli coach Matthias Jaissle are currently candidates to replace Kovac with Hasenhüttl being the desired candidate of managing director Marcel Schäfer and sports director Sebastian Schindzielorz. Bo Svensson is also an option.
