Aston Villa v Bologna programme
Inside Tuesday’s programme we have a Legends Column from UEFA Super Cup winner Mark Walters, an in-depth feature interview with Martin Laursen and a Q&A with Gianluca Pagliuca, the former Italian No1 goalkeeper who has a deep passion for Villa.
Pagliuca lived out a dream when he played at Villa Park for Inter Milan in the UEFA Cup.
Walking out at the club’s famous home in September 1994 for the second leg of a first round tie was a major thrill for the Italian international, who had played in the World Cup final just two months earlier.
Pagliuca’s only taste of Villa Park as a player left him with mixed emotions following Inter’s exit from the competition on penalties, with Phil King smashing the winning spot kick past him.
The 57-year-old returns with hometown team Bologna, for whom he coaches the youth team goalkeepers.
“I was born in Bologna, which is called Basket City in Italy, and where there is a football team that won 7 scudetti,” he told the News & Record.
“I am in love with both basketball and football. And I am a huge fan of the Bologna teams in the two sports, Virtus for basketball and Bologna FC for football. But believe me, Aston Villa is truly in my heart too.”
