PLAYER RATINGS | Bayer Leverkusen 5-0 Werder Bremen

Bayer Leverkusen secured their first-ever Bundesliga title win, whilst also ending Bayern Munich’s 11-year monopoly in style as they beat Werder Bremen

After early nerves in the first half, Leverkusen grew into the game and had full control of the half. The breakthrough came when Julian Malatini fouled Jonas Hofmann to give Leverkusen a penalty. Victor Boniface stepped up and gave Leverkusen the lead in his first start since his injury in January. .

Amine Adli had the next best chance when his effort crashed off of the bar and apart from a few half chances from Bremen, Leverkusen’s defence was very rarely troubled.

In the second half, Leverkusen really turned on the style with the introduction of Florian Wirtz. Granit Xhaka doubled Leverkusen’s lead with a long-range screamer in the 60th minute before Wirtz then decided to one-up the Swiss international with his only screamer. The 20-year-old then took over the game and in the 83rd minute scored the fourth for Leverkusen which nearly incited a pitch invasion. Then with what turned out to be the last kick of the game, Wirtz completed his hat-trick.

The performance for Leverkusen summed up their season as they won their first-ever Bundesliga title in their 119-year history.
