'The team has lacked identity and style'

Gary Neville has commented on Erik ten Hag's sacking and believes there is a lot of pressure on Man United to get the next appointment right.

The former United right-back wrote on social media: “Unfortunately this announcement was coming.

“The game against Tottenham a few weeks ago was like one of those 'I've seen this before and I know how it ends' moments.

“It was a game in which there was a feeling that United would bounce back and shake off a difficult start to the season and I think everyone associated with United hoped that the decision to keep Erik Ten Hag and the transfer window of summer made things better, but it hasn't happened and I suspect the Spurs game was the final straw!

“There will be pressure to get the next appointment right and I think the process to find that replacement will have started a few weeks ago after that game against Tottenham.

“The results have been killer, but equally the team has lacked identity and style. It is essential that whoever comes in now delivers. With performance come results. These two factors cannot be disconnected.

“The challenge for the new manager is that he will have to work with the majority of this current group of players for probably 2 or 3 transfer windows with such a large investment and commitment in terms of the length of the contracts.

“However, although they are nowhere near being title contenders, they are much better than what they are showing. The baby has been thrown out with the bathwater too many times over the last 10 or 12 seasons at United and the club needs to try.” and enter a phase of stability.

“This is proving difficult to achieve, whether the club changes the manager or the manager changes the players. Until this cycle is over, United will not be able to get back to the top.

“I always trust that United will win again, but until they enter a phase of stability it won't happen. I really hope that this next game is the last for a good number of years and that success can return from that.”
