Fixtures
- Aston Villa Vs. Crystal Palace – Wed, Oct 30th 2024, 19:45
Aston Villa will look to book their place in the quarter-finals of the Carabao Cup on Wednesday evening, as Crystal Palace visit Villa Park (ko 7.45pm).
Unai Emery’s men are unbeaten in their last 11 games in all competitions, with goals from Emi Buendía and Jhon Durán sealing a 2-1 victory over Wycombe Wanderers in Round Three last month.
Villa will be looking to get back on the winning trail and bounce back from late disappointment on Saturday, when – having taken the lead through Ross Barkley against AFC Bournemouth – they were pegged back in the final minute at Villa Park, having to settle for a 1-1 draw.
Oliver Glasner’s side will enter the fixture with momentum, having picked up their first victory of the Premier League season on Sunday, with a 1-0 win at home to Tottenham Hotspur.
The Eagles secured their place in Round Four with a 2-1 win at QPR in the previous round, and an emphatic 4-0 victory over Norwich City in Round Three.
Stats
Aston Villa have progressed from three of their four League Cup ties with Crystal Palace, most recently in the 2003/04 fourth round, with the Villans winning 3-0 at Villa Park.
Crystal Palace are winless in their last seven trips to Villa Park in all competitions (D2, L5), since a 1-0 win in the Premier League in December 2013 under Tony Pulis.
Aston Villa have been eliminated from the League Cup by fellow Premier League opposition in each of the last three seasons, each time in the third round: by Chelsea in 2021/22, Manchester United in 2022/23 and Everton in 2023/24.
Villa’s Morgan Rogers has scored in each of his last five League Cup appearances, finishing as the competition’s top goalscorer last season while at Middlesbrough (five goals).
Crystal Palace have lost each of their last three fourth-round games in the League Cup, last reaching the quarter-final stage in 2011/12 as a Championship side.
The Villans have only ever lost one cup fixture against Palace, across 11 meetings in the League Cup and the FA Cup, a 4-1 defeat coming at Selhurst Park in 1994 as Villa were knocked out of the League Cup at the fourth-round stage.
The Last Meeting
Our last meeting with Palace was one to forget for the Villans as we fell to a 5-0 defeat at Selhurst Park on the final day of 2023/24.
Injuries, combined with the fact Villa had already secured fourth place and Champions League football, meant boss Emery made four changes to his starting XI.
Palace took a commanding 2-0 lead into half-time courtesy of the in-form Jean-Philippe Mateta.
Mateta then completed his hat-trick after the break, with a third goal sandwiched between two strikes from Eberechi Eze to compound a difficult afternoon for the Lions.
Team News
Villa manager Emery welcomes back Jaden Philogene after the wide man served a one-match suspension against Bournemouth.
Boubacar Kamara will be hoping for further minutes having come off the bench in Villa’s last two outings, while Tyrone Mings will be looking to make his return to action.
Eagles boss Glasner has doubts over the services of Jefferson Lerma and Ismaila Sarr after the pair were withdrawn with reported muscular injuries during Sunday’s victory over Spurs.
Palace will also be without Chadi Riad (knee), Chris Richards (thigh), Matheus Franca (adductor) and Cheick Doucoure (toe), who all remain sidelined.
