It was not a secret that after a year in which his continuity was in doubt all season, Luka Modric ended up continuing at the Santiago Bernabeu. A day after Kylian Mbappe was presented at the Santiago Bernabeu, Real Madrid confirmed a contract extension for Modric.

As usual for more than thirty years at Real Madrid, Modric extended his agreement for one year. The 38-year-old will start his 13th year at the club looking to build on his 26 trophies and 534 games. Modric is likely to become the oldest player to play for Real Madrid this season, and could even become the most decorated.

It remains to be seen how Carlo Ancelotti will field his squad this coming season, with Fede Valverde and Aurelien Tchouameni likely to start. The usual third spot in midfield will be up for grabs if Jude Bellingham continues to play further forward, between Eduardo Camavinga and Modric. The Croatian veteran was very useful for Ancelotti last year, but less often as a starter.
