The iconic Estadio Santiago Bernabeu is no more. Real Madrid have decided to change the name of the ground they have called home since 1947.
According to MarcoReal Madrid has to all intents and purposes shortened the name to just “Bernabeu”. The name of the stadium on social media, and in commercial terms has been changed to not include “Santiago”, including the website of the stadium itself. Originally named Estadio Nuevo Chamartin, the stadium was named after the then president Santiago Bernabeuwho was a former player and chairman for 35 years between 1943 and 1978. He is also credited with starting their glorious run of success in the late 1950s and early 1960s which made the club what who are today.
The Bernabeu, which is being renovated and completed in 2024, has faced no shortage of problems, with legal challenges impacting its plans to host concerts and even build an underground car park linked to the stadium. Real Madrid President Florentino Perez described him as a profit driver for the club going forward. The following year, it is set to host Spain's first NFL game.
