Real Madrid hit with a major blow, as the judge ordered to stop the project that foresees a profit of 561 million euros
Real Madrid has been dealt a major blow, after a judge ordered the construction of tunnels related to its parking project near the Santiago Bernabeu stadium.
A subsidiary company of Real Madridthe Real Madrid Estadio, with the General Manager of Real Madrid Jose Angel Sanchez as the only employee, won the contract of the Council of Madrid to manage two underground car parks directly linked to the underground car park at the Santiago Bernabeu.
The Council will pay the cost of the construction of the parking lot, but then the Real Madrid Estadio will take a 40-year lease, originally valued at 561 million euros of profit in that period. They were the only bidder on the project.
However, for some time now, a union of residents in the area has been fighting the project, which will see their neighborhood torn apart for the works, and then also several major arteries in the area will be narrowed, increasing traffic. The car park offers about 500 parking spaces to residents, although they have argued that this is about the same amount that will be lost above ground.
The union has been locked in a legal battle with the Council over the project, who argue that the project only serves private interests, and proper planning permission has not been carried out. The Real Madrid Estadio had agreed to pay the costs of any dispute so that the building could continue while the legal process was ongoing.
Now a judge has established that the construction of the tunnels leading to the potential parking lot has decided that it must be stopped, Sport. The judge's decision is based on the fact that if the work continues, that work will then become difficult or impossible to reverse, so the legal process must be completed first. The Council has two weeks to appeal the decision.
