Real Madrid have lost manager Alberto Garrido, who is joining Watford in the English Championship on a two-year deal. Garrido has held various roles at the club, but most recently was assistant to Castilla coach Raul Gonzalez.
Garrido, 48, has worked at various stages of the academy over the past 19 years, with a year off at Las Rozas. Working with Guti, Zinedine Zidane and now Raul, his tutelage has contributed to the development of Fran Garcia, Achraf Hakimi, Sergio Arribas and Fede Valverde. He will now become part of the coaching staff in London.
“He is a very experienced coach, who has worked with Zidane. He recently worked with Raul at Real Madrid, as a sort of coaching mentor. We have a lot of Spanish-speaking players and he brings this to our coaching staff,” said Watford manager Tom Cleverley. The Watford Observer.
“He trains a style of football and identity that I like, and most importantly he comes from a winning environment, which, as I said, is really important. He ticks a lot of boxes for me personally, as a mentor, and for the club in general.”
Garrido is also a fluent English speaker, but is taking on his first role outside of Spain. Raul has confirmed that he will continue in charge of Castilla next season, despite being heavily linked with a move to Germany this summer. Raul is in charge of his sixth season at the B side at Valdebebas.
