Real Madrid to receive La Liga trophy behind closed doors

Real Madrid will receive the Spanish league title at their Valdebebas training ground on Sunday without fans present, before officially lifting the trophy after their home match against Alaves three days later.

Carlo Ancelotti’s side secured a record-extending 36th La Liga title on Saturday when they defeated Cadiz before Barcelona were defeated at Girona — ensuring Real could not be caught at the top of the standings with four rounds of matches remaining.

Real are next in action in La Liga on Saturday when they play away to Granada, but the club and Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) have agreed to delay the awarding of the trophy until the following day as to not be disrespectful to Granada, who will be mathematically relegated from La Liga if they do not win the match.

Instead, Real will receive the trophy at their training ground the following day from RFEF president Pedro Rocha, before celebrating the success with their supporters at the famous Cibeles fountain in the city centre — where the club’s titles are traditionally celebrated.

Following Sunday’s celebrations in the Spanish capital, Real will officially lift the La Liga title following their home league match against Alaves on May 14.

They are next in action at home in the second leg of their Champions League semi-final against Bayern Munich, with the scoreline poised at 2-2 after last week’s first leg in Germany.
