Real Sociedad kicked off their 2024-25 Europa League league stage campaign with a slightly disappointing 1-1 draw against Nice at the Allianz Riviera on Wednesday.
Imanol Alguacil opted for a 5-3-2 formation in the south of France, and it looked to be paying dividends in the early stages as La Real took the lead in the 18th minute courtesy of the first goal of the season by Ander Barrenetxea. However, the hosts found their way past five defenders to force an equalizer just before half-time – it came courtesy of Dutch midfielder Pablo Rosario.
In the second half, La Real goalkeeper Alex Remiro came up big to secure a point. Nice were awarded a penalty but the Spanish stopper broke brilliantly to his right to keep out Evann Guessand's effort.
Not a bad result for Royal Societybut they will be disappointed to have driven. It also means they are now on an eight-game winning streak to start the season, which is a very disappointing return.
