Real Sociedad's Champions League hopes hang by a thread after first-leg defeat at Paris Saint-Germain

Despite a strong performance for most of the 90 minutes at the Parc des Princes, Real Sociedade fell to defeat against Paris Saint-Germain, leaving their hopes of progression to the quarter-finals of the competition.

Real were by far the better team in the first half, and came closest to scoring as Mikel Merino's piledriver from distance hit the crossbar, well beaten by Gianluigi Donnarumma.

PSG came out much better in the second period, and they took the lead shortly after the interval as Kylian Mbappe finished in the back seat after Marquinhos flick-on from a corner. It was 2-0 shortly after, with Bradley Barcola scored a nice solo goal to double the advantage.

It stayed that way until the full time whistle. Real society they are not out of this tie, although they will need a titanic performance in the return leg at the Real Arena, which takes place in three weeks.
